THE UNLIKELY ALLIANCE THAT ESTABLISHED CORANDERRK

Elders presented birthday gifts and a petition to Queen Victoria at Governor Barkly’s 1863 event

On 24 May 1863, Victorian Governor, Sir Henry Barkly, held a ball to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday. Led by Simon Wonga, Aboriginal Elders presented gifts to the Queen, and a petition to establish Coranderrk. Amazingly, Coranderrk Reserve was established just five weeks later. But was it all just a happy coincidence?

Reconciliation Manningham acknowledges the Woiwurrung language people of the Kulin Federation as the traditional custodians and curators of the Yarra Valley Estate, the land we now all share.

We pay respects to their Elders past and present, and take pride as Australians, in sharing this heritage of the world’s oldest living culture.
